THE SHOPIFY RENTAL COMPARISON

Rentshelf vs
Sesami

A configurable booking platform or a focused rental workspace?

Sesami is a Shopify booking platform for services, experiences and events, with POS, calendar sync, API and SDK options. Rentshelf is designed for merchants renting physical products through Shopify and managing the booking through pickup, outstanding balance and return.

START WITH YOUR BUSINESS

Two options. Different priorities.

Consider Sesami if…

  • Services, appointments and omnichannel POS scheduling are core revenue streams.
  • You need API or SDK access and configurable email or webhook flows.
  • Staff resources, group appointments and enterprise solution support matter more than item returns.

Consider Rentshelf if…

  • The core availability question is how many physical units remain across a rental period.
  • You need a simpler product-rental workspace with a lower paid entry point.
  • Pickup, remaining balances, locations and returns belong in the daily workflow.

Sesami deserves serious consideration when appointments are an omnichannel platform problem and extensibility is a requirement. Rentshelf is easier to evaluate when the job is physical rental stock and its handoffs. Compare the total operating model, including configuration ownership and the tier needed for your integrations.

RUN THE SAME TEST IN BOTH APPS

A practical comparison scorecard.

Use one representative product and record the result of each step. A published feature is useful only when it works with your inventory, theme, checkout and staff process.

01

Availability

Create overlapping requests with real quantities, variants, buffers and locations.

02

Storefront

Check date selection, unavailable states, add-ons, delivery and the amount due before checkout.

03

Payment

Follow deposits, remaining balances, refunds and any usage-based charges without assuming a status means paid.

04

Operations

Open the record staff use for preparation, pickup, a booking change and return.

05

Connected tools

Test calendar direction, privacy defaults, customer invitations and failure or reconnection behavior.

06

Migration

Confirm what imports, what remains historical and how duplicate storefront widgets are prevented during cutover.

DECISION GUIDE 01

Price the architecture you will actually use

Sesami's plans are organized around resources and flows, with broader automation and enterprise capabilities on higher tiers. Rentshelf's published plans are organized around rental products, booking horizon and rental operations. Comparing only the lowest monthly price hides the point at which your required capability appears.

List the calendars, staff, locations, automated messages, webhooks and rentable items needed on launch day. Map each requirement to a documented tier, then repeat for the likely twelve-month state. Keep optional integrations out of the baseline unless someone owns their setup and monitoring.

  • Count staff and calendar resources.
  • Count rentable products and booking horizon.
  • Identify the exact tier for every required integration.
DECISION GUIDE 02

Inspect extensibility without assuming it is free

An API or SDK can justify a platform choice when a defined workflow cannot be configured otherwise. It also creates implementation, testing and maintenance work. Write the event, data and expected failure behavior before treating extensibility as a benefit.

For a standard rental operation, a focused workflow may remove the need for custom code. For a multi-brand service platform, the ability to build custom flows can be more valuable. Estimate both subscription and ownership cost.

DECISION GUIDE 03

Run an omnichannel handoff test

Create one booking from the online store and one through the in-person process you expect staff to use. Confirm customer identity, payment state, location and calendar visibility. Then change or cancel the booking using the permitted workflow.

For the rental test, continue beyond the appointment time: collect the item, record any balance and mark the return. This exposes whether the chosen system covers the full operation or only the initial reservation.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

A jewellery store offering consultations and occasion-piece rentals

A consultation consumes an advisor's calendar; a necklace rental consumes an item for several days and must be returned. Test both records. Sesami's resources and flows may suit the consultation. For the necklace, verify item availability, payment state, pickup details and return visibility in Rentshelf before deciding whether one or two systems are appropriate.

A THOUGHTFUL SWITCH

Bring your workflow. Check the details.

01

Map your current rentals

Record upcoming bookings, inventory, paid deposits and outstanding returns. Keep a copy of your existing records.

02

Configure one real product

Match pricing, duration, availability and pickup rules. Use a representative item before configuring the whole catalog.

03

Complete a test booking

Review dates, cart, checkout, confirmation and the booking record. Coordinate the storefront cutover so two widgets do not compete.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Your comparison questions, answered.

When should I choose Sesami instead?

Services, appointments and omnichannel POS scheduling are core revenue streams. You need API or SDK access and configurable email or webhook flows. Staff resources, group appointments and enterprise solution support matter more than item returns.

How much does Rentshelf cost?

Rentshelf offers Free, Starter at $9.99/month and Growth at $19.99/month. Free includes 3 rental products, up to 3 add-ons per product and a 15-day forward calendar. Starter includes 25 products, unlimited add-ons and 90 days; Growth includes unlimited rental products and 365 days. Shopify subscription charges are separate.

Can I move from Sesami to Rentshelf?

Plan the switch around your existing bookings. Check product rules, stock, deposits and outstanding returns first. Rentshelf offers CSV product import on Growth, but that is not a promise of automatic booking-history migration. Contact us to review your setup before switching.

Can I test the customer experience?

Yes. Explore the live demo, then test a representative product in your own store. Check dates, unavailable periods, add-ons, payment amounts and the booking record before making rentals available to customers.

How was this comparison prepared?

Prepared by Rentshelf using official sources linked directly from the relevant claims, reviewed on September 13, 2026. These are documented capabilities, not a hands-on benchmark of every competing app. Features and plan limits can change.
