Start with what your customers book

BookThatApp is a broad Shopify booking app. One install can handle appointments, classes, tours and product rentals, which is why stores searching for alternatives often want different things. Before comparing apps, decide what is scarce in your business. If it is a person's time, a room or a class seat, you need appointment scheduling. If it is a physical item that leaves your premises and comes back, you need rental availability, handoff and return control.

This guide compares four Shopify alternatives sorted by that split: Sesami and Cowlendar for appointment-led stores, Rentshelf and Product Rentals Pro for item rentals. Rentshelf is our app, so treat this as a comparison written by one of the options. All plans come from official Shopify App Store listings checked on 16 October 2026; confirm them before you decide.

BookThatApp pricing and limits today

The official listing shows a free plan with 10 total bookings and no product limit. Lite costs $25 per month for 50 bookings, 1 staff account and 1 booking type, with POS support, booking fields and Google Calendar. Premium costs $49.95 for 350 bookings and 10 staff and adds deposits and SMS. Business costs $110 for 1,000 bookings and 20 staff and adds API access. Annual billing saves about 17 percent.

Two numbers drive the cost: monthly bookings and staff accounts. A store that schedules several instructors pays for staff it uses. A store that only rents equipment may move up a plan purely because of booking count, while the staff allowance goes unused. That mismatch is the most common reason a rental-only store looks for an alternative.

Four alternatives at a glance

The table groups the alternatives by the resource they schedule. Prices are monthly in USD from each official listing and exclude your Shopify plan. Look first at the limit column, because that is what you will outgrow.

Sesami: appointment scheduling priced by calendars

Sesami is built for service bookings. Its listing prices plans by resources, meaning staff or room calendars: Small at $19 per month includes 5 resources, Pro at $129 includes 20 and adds group appointments, customer rescheduling and Klaviyo, and Premium at $299 includes 40 with multi-location support. Every plan lists Google Calendar sync, Shopify POS and an API. The free plan is for development stores only, and the listing mentions a 10-day free trial.

Choose it when your scarce resource is people's time and you need staff calendars to stay in sync. It is not designed to track an item that leaves with a customer for several days and must be inspected on return.

Cowlendar: priced by booking revenue

Cowlendar replaces a product's add-to-cart button with a book-now button and supports one-to-one, group and multiday bookings. Its free plan allows 5 bookings per month. Paid plans are capped by booking revenue rather than booking count: Starter at $13.99 covers up to $1,000, Basic at $29.99 up to $3,000 and Growth at $59.99 up to $10,000, each with a 7-day trial. All paid plans list deposits, prepayment, custom durations and Google, Outlook, Zoom and Teams connections.

Revenue-based pricing suits stores with many low-value bookings. Estimate your busiest month's booking revenue before choosing, because a few high-value bookings can move you up a tier quickly.

Rentshelf and Product Rentals Pro: for items, not appointments

If what you book is equipment, clothing or gear, a rental app models the problem more directly. Rentshelf counts units per product or variant across the rental period, adds buffer days for cleaning or delivery, and tracks pickup and return in one workspace. Its free plan covers 3 rental products with bookings up to 15 days ahead; Starter at $9.99 covers 25 products and 90 days, and Growth at $19.99 removes the product limit and adds 365-day booking, waitlists, agreements and calendar sync. Paid plans have no booking count limit.

Product Rentals Pro also focuses on items and prices by rentals per month: 50 on Starter, 200 on Growth and 500 on Volume. It lists buffers by delivery method and, from Growth, security deposits and damage protection. Compare the two by your catalog size and monthly volume. Our pricing page shows Rentshelf's current limits.

If you book both people and items

Some stores genuinely need both, such as a surf school that rents boards and sells lessons. Map each scarce resource separately: the instructor's time is an appointment, the board is a rental unit. One app may handle both acceptably, but test the case where the instructor is free and the boards are all booked, and the reverse. The correct resource must block the booking.

If one app cannot model both cleanly, running an appointment app and a rental app side by side is a valid architecture, as long as each resource lives in exactly one system. Our guide to BookThatApp and Cowlendar for a mixed rental business walks through that test in detail.

  • List every scarce resource: staff, rooms, seats, items.
  • Note whether each one leaves your premises.
  • Estimate monthly bookings, booking revenue and catalog size.
  • Test an overlap that exhausts each resource separately.
  • Check the Shopify order shows the dates and resources your team needs.

FAQ

How much does BookThatApp cost?

On 16 October 2026 its official Shopify listing showed a free plan with 10 total bookings, Lite at $25 per month, Premium at $49.95 and Business at $110, with lower annual prices. Plans differ mainly by monthly bookings and staff accounts.

What is the best BookThatApp alternative for rentals only?

For physical item rentals, compare apps built around rental stock, such as Rentshelf or Product Rentals Pro. They count units across rental dates and handle returns, instead of pricing by staff accounts you may not use.

Which alternative suits appointments and staff scheduling?

Sesami prices by staff or room calendars and lists Google Calendar sync and POS, while Cowlendar prices by booking revenue and supports group and multiday bookings. Both are oriented to appointments rather than item returns.

Can I use two booking apps in one Shopify store?

Yes, if each scarce resource is managed in exactly one app, for example lessons in an appointment app and equipment in a rental app. Test that a product page shows only one booking widget and that orders carry the right details.

Do these alternatives use Shopify checkout?

All four are Shopify apps that take bookings through your Shopify store. Confirm in a test order how dates, deposits and resources appear on the Shopify order before switching.
